Memo

Furthermore, a writing technique that I learned in this course is writing a memo. Writing memos is commonly used in practical life. Memos are an excellent way to deliver a message, especially in business. The following is the written assignment to test my abilities in writing memos.

Subject: Problem on Campus

Date: February 19, 2019

The purpose of this memo is to highlight an obvious problem on the CCNY campus. The staff is lacking and is not doing its intended job.

Summary

In general, the CCNY staff is not giving the full effort to help students that need help. Such a problem is a burden on the campus and needs to be solved.

Discussion

CCNY is one of the largest schools in New York and is well-known among the people. As a result, any problem that is spotted is considered a black dot on the school’s reputation. Such a big school must have many staves that serve the students ‘benefits.

Unfortunately, the staff members do not do their job which is serving students’ needs. However, they make their lives worse and more complicated. That previous statement is supported by many students that have had an inconvenient experience with the staff and came out with the conclusion that they are oppressed in CCNY. The following is a short story that expose the different faces of the staff’s lack.

A student went to his advisor to get a permission to register for classes for the following semester and these classes were approved by the advisor. Later, the student found out that one of his classes does not count towards his major. As a result, he got disqualified to receive financial aid. Therefore, the student goes back to his advisor asking him “Why did you approve this class in the first place?” then the advisor says, “It is not my problem, I can not do anything”. This advisor has reached the maximum level of ignorance and did not help the student as he is supposed to do. So, the student went to the dean and asked him for a solution and he was told to fill up an overtally form with information and signatures to change the unneeded class. Whenever the student was trying to reach a professor or an official from the staff, he could not find him because either that person left early, or they did not even come. After a long journey to get those signatures, he needed a stamp from the department chair that only comes for 3 hours a week. Therefore, the student missed the deadline and loses all his financial aid.

What kind of staff that comes only 3 hours a week? What is he getting paid for? How come an advisor approves a class that is not required? Is not this his job to check what works and what does not? All these questions point to one point, the ignorance and lack of responsibility of the CCNY staff. They do not do their work fully as they must do. Students pay tuition to find help if they need, not to find someone that makes their problem worse.

Recommendation

I would like to talk to you, when you get a chance, about a further discussion on that staff problem we have on our campus. I think we should ask the board of directors to join and provide their respected opinion. You can reach me at alfredo.sam2000@gmail.com.
